Govermentt will review the recommendations of CMAG: Abbas

Spokesperson of the President’s Office Abbas Adhil Riza has said that the government will review the recommendations of the Commonwealth in the recent statement issued on the Maldives by Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Abbas said that the government will consider the statement made by an organisation such as the Commonwealth and will review their recommendations.

“Via the Foreign Ministry, we are trying to recognize what it is the Commonwealth wants. The Government will cooperate with the Commonwealth in whatever capacity the government is able to cooperate with them. This will be based on the Constitution of the Maldives, the government will consider their recommendations within the scope of the Constitution,” he said.

“It is only Nasheed who is making the allegations of a coup. Others do not believe this. So we have to consider our stand if Nasheed rejects the report which will be issued with the assistance of the Commonwealth. And we will have to consider how the Commonwealth will react if that happens. We have to clarify this,” Abbas added.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the political parties representing the government coalition have been condemning the recent statement of the CMAG. They say that the recommendations of the Commonwealth are calls to violations of the rights of the people.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali said that “It surprised me that the CMAG report stated that majority of Maldivians do not believe in the Inquiry Commission. How would they (CMAG) know? Even we, who are involved in local Politics continually, are not aware of how the majority see it.”

DRP Deputy Leader Ibrahim Shareef said that no organisation can call to oppose the constitution and law without considering what is stipulated in the constitution.

“None of these statements have ever referred to the constitution. They have never mentioned anything with regards to amending the constitution. So if an organisation is calling for early elections without recommending amending the constitution than such a call is a call to oppose the constitution,” he said.
