We will try to answer the question whether there was a coup or not- National Inquiry Commission

The National Inquiry Commission has said that the commission will try to provide an answer to the question whether the former government was toppled by a coup or not in February 7.

In a a press briefing held yesterday, commission member Dr. Ibrahim Yasir said that the inquiry commission will try to provide answers to as much as questions raised regarding the transfer of power. He also said that the commission has been trying to get foreign advice with regards to the investigation.

Dr. Yasir also said that the commission has initiated dialogues with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to solve the issues raised by MDP against the committee through peaceful dialogue.

The Commission was compiled by Dr. Waheed to inquire into the events from January 14th to February 8th and relating to the transfer of power between him and Mohamed Nasheed, MDP Supremo.

Members of the Commission are Ismail Shafeeu, who filled several ministerial posts under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s regime, including those of Home Minister and Defence Minister, Dr. Ibrahim Yasir Ahmed and Dr. Ali Fawaz Shareef.

Meanwhile, MDP has expressed its deep regret and disappointment at the composition of the Commission of National Inquiry established by President Dr. Waheed to investigate events surrounding the resignation of former President Nasheed.

“It does not include any eminent international experts. And the inclusion of individuals who held Cabinet posts during the autocratic government of former President Gayoom, including the appointment of a Chair – Mr. Ismail Shafeeu – who had held various ministerial posts under former President Gayoom including the position of Defense Minister at a time of widespread human rights abuses in the country, suggests that no effort has been made to ensure independence and impartiality,” the former ruling party said.
