Investigation of the violence on Feb 6 should be expedited- Fuwad

Minister of State for the Fisheries Ministry, Fuwad Gasim has said that the investigation of the violence of the activists of the then ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on February against the peaceful demonstrators of the 23 December coalition should be expedited.

Fuwad said that the MDP counter protestors violated the human rights of the peaceful protestors of the coalition.

“It is very clear from their actions. It was witnessed that they attempted to harm the leader of Jumhooree Party Gasim Ibrahim. Isn’t it so? So there is no doubt that the MDP activists were not peacefully protesting against the coalition,” he said.

Fuwad said that the Police controlled the protestors from turning too violent. He said that the then government of MDP tried to shed the blood of the coalition protestors and attacked some of them. He said that this is one of the most vile violations of the human rights by Nasheed’s government.

He said that Nasheed’s government tried to send the police officers who were controlling the protestors away from the scene so as to cause bloodshed. He said that the Police however refused to go and the government sent the army to pressure the police to leave the area.

“Then what was done? The army were also removed from the area. The opportunity was created for total chaos, violence and bloodshed. So why were the police officers sent away from the area? These questions should be answered by the army and the former President Muhammad Nasheed,” he said.

Fuwad said that the Police had to defy the unconstitutional orders of their chief in commands and gathered at the Republican Square because of the violations of the human rights on February 6th. He said that it was these actions that lead to the transfer of powers.
