Earth Hour celebrated in Maldives
This year’s Earth Hour has been celebrated in the Maldives. The first activity of this symbolic event was held in Hiriya School Friday under the name of “Understanding Renewable Energy”.
This event organized by Ministry of Housing and Environment and Maldives Energy Authority (MEA) in collaboration with Scout Association of Maldives (SAM), State Electric Company (STELCO), Linear-tech, DELTA, Center for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Villa High School (VHS) and Hiriya School began at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. 50 students from each school in Male’ City were invited to this exhibition.
In this two day event, information regarding renewable energy, solar panels, their use and how it works were given to students. Information was delivered by 20 higher secondary students selected from VHS and CHSE and trained specifically for this program by STELCO and MEA.
Students and teachers from Majeedhiyya School, Galholhu Madhrasa, Dahrumavantha School, Madhrasathul Ahmadhiyya, Iskandar School and Hiriya School visited Hiriya School today to see the rooftop solar panels established on roofs of Hiriya School and nearby Tajudheen School and Social Center. In addition to this, students were given information regarding the models displayed by Linear-tech, STELCO and Delta. Exhibition was closed at 5:00 p.m. Friday and was continued on Saturday from 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m.
This year’s Earth Hour was celebrated on Saturday March 31, 2012 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time.
