Sheikh Fareed calls on Dr. Majeed to Repent

Local preacher, Sheikh Ibraheem Fareed Ahmed has called on the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baari to repent for approving the new Religious Unity Regulations which was published in the government’s gazette on Saturday.

Speaking to the media at the office of the Islamic Foundation of Maldives (IMF), the Deputy Leader of the committee of Islamic Scholars of IMF, Sheikh Fareed said that it is not permissible for anyone to make or approve any regulation which conflicts the Quran and Sunnah.

Sheikh Fareed said that any regulation which conflicts with the Quran and the Sunnah will not be considered correct. He said that the new Religious Unity Regulations published in the government’s gazette with the approval of Dr. Majeed is false.

Sheikh Fareed said that it is saddening that such regulations are published in the gazette of the Muslim country.

“In this saddening state, with tears in my eyes, I ask all those who participated in making, approving and publishing this regulation to repent. And in particular I call the Minister of Islamic Affairs to repent for approving the regulation,” he said.

Moreover, Sheikh Fareed also noted that the new regulation also contradicts many of the articles of the constitution of Maldives.

“There are many many issues in the regulation passed with the approval of the Islamic Ministry. It contradicts the Quran in a number of matters. It violates the freedom granted by Allah to spread the religion of Islam thereby making it baseless. Enjoining good and forbidding evil is a religious obligation. One need not have a special degree to enjoin good and forbid evil. The religion of Islam is a religion of freedom,” he said.
