Govt and opposition will fail if a stable democracy is not established- Saleem
Former President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Ahmed Saleem has said that the government and opposition will fail if a stable democracy is not achieved for the people.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Ahmed Saleem said that democracy need not only be written down in the constitution but by the government, the opposition parties, MPs and independent institutions following the tenets of democracy.
Saleem said that although democracy is written the people of Maldives have yet not started to taste the sweetness of democratic rule.
“The first thing is for the government and the opposition parties to know their rightful role in the democratic process. The opposition should give the government to do their role. And likewise the government should give the same to the opposition parties. Toppling the government is not the only task of the opposition. The government should give the opportunity for the opposition parties,” he said.
