Criminal Court orders Police to summon 15
defendants currently abroad
Including Dictator Gayoom’s Brother Abdulla Hameed
The Criminal Court has issued a court order yesterday requesting Maldives Police Service to summon 15 defendants who are currently abroad in cluding dictator Gayooms brother Abdulla Hameed Abdul Gayoom famous homosexual.
The court order issued by the Criminal Court stated that the many cases are delayed because the defendants are out of the country. This is the second time that the court ordered Maldives Police Service to summon the defendants.
The court order also revealed the names of the fifteen defendants that the court requested the Police to summon to the court.
Among the fifteen defendants wanted by the court include the former Atolls Minister of the former regime, Abdullah Hameed.
Criminal Court’s legal assistant Ahmed Amir earlier told Miadhu Daily that Abdullah Hameed, who is also the brother of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, is charged for taking advantage as a government figure of authority in the former regime.
Amir said that on March 23 the court requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to find the current address of Abdullah Hameed since he was not found in the address mentioned in the documents. However, he said that the PG had yet not replied back.
Criminal Court scheduled two hearings of the trial of Abdullah Hameed so far but however, the hearings were both cancelled since he failed to attend the court when summoned.
The corruption cases filed against Abdullah Hameed was based on the reports of Auditor General which exposed many cases of corruption of those in authority in the former regime.
Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service earlier said that Abdullah Hameed will be brought to the court even with the intervention of Interpol if necessary. Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Media Official of Maldives Police Service, Sub-inspector of Police, Ahmed Shiyam said that Abdullah Hameed has been wanted by Maldives Police Service on charges of corruption, but yet not found. He said that if the court issues a warrant, the Police will take him to his trial hearings at the Criminal Court even with via the help of Interpol.
Shiyam said that the Police has requested Department of Immigration to hold the passport of Abdullah Hameed and report it to the Police if he were come to Maldives.
He also said that if the warrant is issued the Police will issue the red notice to arrest Abdullah Hameed abroad. He said that although the Police understand that Abdullah Hameed is living abroad, the Police does not know the exact country that he is residing in.
