EU Ambassador's visit Maldives


The EU Ambassadors showed appreciation and support for the strong role being played by Maldives in the UN, in particular in relation to Human Rights. 

The EU Ambassadors expressed their strong support to the process of democratic transition of the Maldives.

The EU Ambassadors were pleased that there was mutual understanding of the importance of climate change and that climate change has emerged as a key aspect of Maldivian Foreign Policy.

The EU Ambassadors found the meetings with the various political parties extremely useful to better understand the dynamics of this young democracy.

The EU Ambassadors confirmed that they remained committed to support the democratic institutions in the Maldives.

The EU Ambassadors called on all Parties in the Maldives to work together and support the further strengthening of the democratic institutions.

The EU Ambassadors based in Sri Lanka visited the Maldives from 23 to 25 May 2011. During this visit the EU Ambassadors called on His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Nasheed, President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Waheed, Vice President of the Maldives and Ahmed Naseem, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The EU Delegation also met with representatives of the opposition parties, the Male City Council Mayor and Council members, the Human Right Commission, civil society organizations and the Media. The EU Ambassadors also visited Addu and met with the Addu City Council Members.

The EU Delegation comprised of Christine Robichon, Ambassador of France, Jens Ploetner, Ambassador of Germany, Fabrizio Pio Arpea, Ambassador of Italy, John Rankin, British High Commissioner, Bernard Savage, EU Ambassador.
