President of the Elections Commission, Fuwad Thaufeeg has said that there is no such party registered as Z-DRP. He said that the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has a legal status since the party is registered in the Elections Commission’s political party registry.
“Although supporters of DRP’s founding leader Gayyoom applause believing of a Z-DRP, in truth it has no legal status. There is no party registered as Z-DRP,” Fuwad Thaufeeg said.
Despite this, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom who ruled the Maldives for 30 years, upon his return to Maldives, yesterday, said that the real DRP is Z-DRP.
“Even though they are using such names, Z-DRP has no legal status as a political party,” President of the Elections Commission said.
Fuwad moreover said that he does not believe that even the media can use this un-registered name as a political party.
Meanwhile, DRP Parliamentary Group member and Thulusdhoo MP, Rozaina Adam said that Gayyoom’s statement that Z-DRP is the real DRP is humorous and a big joke.
“Really, Gayyoom saying that is such a big joke. The party registered at the Elections Commission is DRP. Perhaps if Z-DRP is registered as a political party it can be another political party. However, DRP is still DRP,” Rozaina said.
“Those at the forefront of what they call as Z-DRP are toddlers in the political ground,” she said.
Some members of DRP said that since there is no party registered in the Elections Commission as Z-DRP, it might be that Gayyoom registered Z-DRP in India during his recent trip to India.
