Dictator Gayoom asked Indian intervention fearing his arrest on his return- Zuhair

President’s Office Press Secretary, Mohamed Zuhair has said that the Former President Dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has requested the Indian government’s intervention fearing his arrest by the Maldivian government upon his return.

Zuhair said that the government of Maldives will give the former President Dictator Gayyoom security even without his request to the Indian Government to intervene with Maldives on his behalf.

“This government arrests people in the boundaries of law. President Nasheed is not only the champion of the environment, but he is the champion of human rights too. Specifically, President Nasheed is the champion of respecting the rights of his political opponents. The world knows this. And the world has given this honour to the President,” he said.

Zuhair said that Gayyoom tried to mislead the international community on the democratic principles implemented and called to by the present government.

“I am very surprised. I extremely surprised hearing that lie Gayyoom made today. I want to tell the public that today Gayyoom lied. Gayyoom did request the intervention of the government of India fearing that he might be arrested and assaulted on his return,” he said.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, a top official of the Indian government affirmed that Gayyoom requested the intervention of Indian government fearing his arrest upon his return by President Nasheed’s government. However, Gayyoom boldly denied making any such requests.
