Former President of Maldives and Founding Leader of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has said that the Z-DRP is in reality a reform movement to propagate the true DRP ideology.

Upon his return to Maldives, speaking to the media at Male’ International Airport, Gayyoom said that there is thought on registering a new political party as Z-DRP.

Dictator Gayoom said that those members who split away from the real ideology of DRP can form their own political party. He said that Z-DRP is a political reform movement striving to achieve the actual ideology and cause of DRP.

Gayyoom said that the people now see that the party has now strayed away from its actual cause upon which is was formed under his leadership in 2005. He said that it is for this reason that Z-DRP movement was initiated.

In view of the recent protests and demonstrations orchestrated by the youth to voice out the concern of the public on the soaring prices of commodities and services, Gayyoom denied the claims that he was the mastermind behind the demonstrations. He said that he had no part in it and that he only got the news of the demonstrations only through the media.

Critiquing the recent warning made by ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Leader Moosa Manik (Reeko) in a MDP rally that Gayyoom can never come back from India to Maldives, Gayyoom said that Moosa Manik’s warning is very foolhardy. He said that hat all Maldivian nationals have the right to return to his country whenever he likes and this right cannot be violated by anyone. He said that whether it is himself or anyone from the Maldives, no one can prohibit them from coming to Maldives.
