Thasmeen calls for the resignation of the members who reject DRP charter
Leader of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has called for the resignation of all DRP MPs who reject the DRP charter from the party.
In an interview to Miadhu Daily, DRP Leader Thasmeen said that the people elected the DRP candidates for the Peoples’ Majlis for them to accept the DRP charter and work in line with it.
“However, when these MPs disregard the charter and obey only that which the DRP founding leader Gayyoom says, then the rights of the people who voted for them are being violated. Therefore, I call on these members who reject our charter to resign from our party. I call them to run in the elections again,” Thasmeen said.
“Z-DRP is not a faction of DRP. A faction can be considered a DRP faction when it works in line with the charter of DRP. However, we witness them going against the charter by misusing the logo and altering the name of the party. Why not use their own logo? If it takes too much time to design one, why don’t they use a certain person’s photograph?,” he queried.
Meanwhile, the news of the fuming internal crisis within DRP has been making headlines in the media for quiet sometime. The anti-Thasmeen movement first led by the dismissed DRP Deputy Leader Umar Naseer, which is now taken over by DRP founding leader Gayoom, has been continuously attempting to expose Thasneem’s leadership lapses and defame him.
However, against the background of all these mounting challenges and the volatile internal clashes, Thasmeen on his part has been assuring his fellow party members and supporters he will remain firm as Party Leader despite the opposition to oust him. Thasmeen is seen to have the support of other strong politicians such as Speaker Abdulla Shahid, and MP Hamdoon Hameed.
Though it was Former President, DRP founding Leader Gayoom himself who endorsed Thasmeen to be his successor in party leadership, he later announced that his support for Thasmeen is now lost.
