Majlis rejects AG and endorse 4 ministers
People’s Majlis yesterday endorsed 4 cabinet ministers from the present cabinet ministers and rejects the current Attorney General (AG) Ali Sawad.
The ministers those who were endorsed are Minister of Transport and Communications AdilSaleem with 39 votes; Minister of Shifa Mohamed with 66 votes; Minister of Home Affairs Hassan Afeef with 37 votes and Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture Dr. MariyamZulfawith 72 votes.
AG Ali Sawad who was not endorsed by the Majlis got 36 votes while 37 voted against him.
Earlier, On June 29 this year the entire cabinet of the Maldives resigned in protest against “scorched earth politics” of the opposition-majority Majlis, leaving only President Mohamed Nasheed and Vice President Mohamed Waheed Hassan in charge of the country.
However, on July 7 the President reinstated his cabinet ministers in a signing ceremony before Chief Judge of the Civil Court, Ali Sameer, following their mass resignation in protest against what they claimed were the “scorched-earth politics” of the opposition-majority parliament.
Meanwhile, People’s Majlis on 22 November, 2011 endorsed only 5 cabinet ministers from the present cabinet ministers after going for a vote to endorse the reappointment of cabinet.The ministers those who were endorsed then were Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Abdul Majid Abdul Bair with 37 votes; Minister of Housing and Environment Mohamed Aslam with 32 votes; Minister of Human Resources Youth and Sports Hassan Latheef with 27 votes; Minister of Economics MahmoodRazi with 18 votes and Minister of Health and Welfare Dr. AminathJameel with 28 votes.The ministers who were not endorsed then were Minister of Fisheries Dr. Ibrahim Didi who got only 3 votes; Minister of Education Dr. Mustafa Luthfi who got 4 votes; Minister of DefenceAmeen Faisal who got 3 votes; Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. Ahmed Shaheed who got 4 votes; Attorney General Dr. Ahmed Ali Sawad who got 5 votes; Minister of Finance and Treasury Ali Hashim who got 3 votes; and Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Shihab who got only 3 votes.
