Only solution is to defeat the government in the 2013 election: Thasmeen

Leader of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that the only solution for the people to save the country from the current situation is by defeating the present government in the 2013 presidential election.

Thasmeen said that the Constitution vests in President Mohamed Nasheed all the executive powers of the Government. He said that thus it is not possible for the opposition to bring down the President except through the presidential election.

Thasmeen said that the only thing that the opposition can do until the Presidential election is to make the public aware of the deterioration of the state of affairs. He said that the result of this can be seen when the people gather near the ballot boxes to vote in the 2013 presidential election.

Thasmeen said that if the people are to have any hope of regaining control of their government, President Nasheed must be defeated in 2013.

In view of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) winning the majority in the Peoples’ Majlis, Thasmeen said that although MDP won the majority they have failed to achieve their sinister goals.

Thasmeen said that it is obvious that there will be some disadvantages on the opposition with the ruling party winning the majority seats in the Peoples’ Majlis. He said that if the opposition works together still the opposition will succeed.
