Government has deceived the people regarding the aim of democracy- Gasim

Maamigili MP and the opposition Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader, Gasim Ibrahim said that the government has deceived the people about the destination of the sail that the people have set towards democracy.

Speaking on the no-confidence motion set against Dr. Afrasheem Ali to remove him from the Judicial Service Commission, Gasim Ibrahim said that President Mohamed Nasheed vowed to rectify the Judiciary but however with the recent proposals in the Peoples’ Majlis he has gone against this vow.

Gasim said that the no-confidence submitted by the MPs of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was not for the refinement of the Judiciary but to achieve political gains.

Gasim said that the government is now trying to merge the three states of power into one and control the parliament and the judiciary.

Meanwhile, Ungufaaru MP, Dr. Afrasheem Ali was removed from the JSC yesterday with 38 MPs voting in favour of a motion of no-confidence against him.

While a total of 72 members participated in the vote, 38 voted against him and 34 members voted in favour of him.

In yesterday’s sitting of the Peoples’ Majlis, the MPs debated regarding the issue for nearly 2 hours. Some members spoke against the motion of no-confidence set against the JSC member Afrasheem Ali. They said that this motion was submitted in order to threaten the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.
