Dictator Gayoom’s Shatan Afrasheem removed from JSC bench
Ungufaaru MP, Dr. Afrasheem Ali has been removed from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) yesterday with 38 MPs voting in favour of a motion of no-confidence against him.
While a total of 72 members participated in the vote, 38 voted against him and 34 members voted in favour of him.
In yesterday’s sitting of the Peoples’ Majlis, the MPs debated regarding the issue for nearly 2 hours. Some members spoke against the motion of no-confidence set against the JSC member Afrasheem Ali. They said that this motion was submitted in order to threaten the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.
Meanwhile, the leader of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) earlier said that DRP does not support the a request from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to remove DRP MP Afrasheem Ali from the Judicial Services Commission (JSC).
Thasmeen Ali said that although Afrasheem Ali aligns himself with the faction of the Honorary Leader Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, the DRP leadership will not support the call to sack him from the JSC.
Thasmeen said that since Afrasheem is from the opposition, DRP will never support any call which results in losing a seat that belongs to the opposition. He said that in this case, the party will work in favour of the member regardless of his faction. The party also issued a 3 line whip in favour of Afrasheem.
