None spoke against party system more than Gayyoom- Nasheed

President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he has not seen any one who spoke and wrote against party system more than former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

Speaking at the rally of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held at Thoddoo, President Nasheed said that although he does not like to speak against Former President, Gayyoom’s recent actions force him speak against him.

President Nasheed said that Gayyoom’s 30 year regime came to end after the 2008 Presidential elections because of the introduction of party system to the Maldives. He said that Gayyoom then realized that he cannot succeed in a multi-party election so he ventured into destroying the party system.

Moreover, President Nasheed underscored the importance of a party system saying that it is only through a party system that the people can be ruled by the people.

Meanwhile, on June 2, 2005 the Peoples Majlis voted unanimously for the creation of a multiparty system. Prior to June 2005, the Maldivian political system was based on the election of individuals, rather than the more common system of election according to party platform. In June 2005, as part of an ongoing programme of democratic reform, new regulations were promulgated to formally recognised political parties within the framework of the electoral system. On October 8, 2008, the country held its first ever multi-party presidential election.
