Maldives have laws contradicting Islam- Adaalath Party

The outgoing President of Adhalath Party Sheikh Hussain Rasheed Ahmed has said in the Maldives, there are laws contradicting Islam.

The Sheikh said so when he gave his farewell address at the inauguration of the 2nd National Assembly of the party held in Dharubaaruge last night. Elaborating the matter, he gave the example of the Law on the protection of children.

The outgoing President said Adhalath Party has a vast responsibility to speak out and propagate the lofty principles of Islam in the face of increasing challenges.

In that context he said it is the foremost duty of the party to strengthen and protect the foundations of Islam we cherish in the Maldives.

Sheikh Rasheed said Adhalath Party is a small party and we should not hesitate to reveal and accept this truth. He said there conflicting opinions among some religious scholars on democracy and party system. Some have very strong views on these systems saying democracy and party system are haram, or prohibited. But he said even in the past Muslim rulers have incorporated good principles practised in other societies in Muslim countries. In a globalised world no country can live in isolation and every country is a party in the global systems such as the United Nations. But our duty as Muslim countries is not to accept or incorporate in our democracy and government or legal system those which contravene the Islamic belief and principles

The Sheikh further said although he is relinquishing his post as Party President, he will always serve the party and the country through the party.
