Deputy Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis, Ahmed Nazim has said that the Speaker Abdullah Shahid and the Deputy Speaker will not grant Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) the authority to enter the chamber of the Majlis.
Ahmed Nazim said this while some of the MPs of the Z-faction of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) continued disrupting the sitting of the Peoples’ Majlis speaking against the warning of the Chief of Defense Force, Moosa Ali Jaleel.
In his reply to the query of Vilufushi MP, Riyaz Rasheed, the Deputy Speaker said that MNDF soldiers cannot enter the Majlis chambers without the consent of the Speaker. He said that the Speaker Abdullah Shahid will not give his approval to MNDF soldiers to enter the Majlis chamber.
Riyaz Rasheed said that the Article 90 of the Constitution stipulates enshrined immunities of parliamentarians as “no member or other person shall be liable to any proceedings in any court, and no person shall be subject to any inquiry, arrest, detention or prosecution, with respect to anything said in, produced before, or submitted to the Peoples’ Majlis or any of its committees, or with respect to any vote given if the same is not contrary to any tenet of Islam.”
