It’s not right to listen to what Gayoom says in the guise of Islam- Nazim Rashad

MP for Thulhaadhoo, Nazim Rashad has said that it is not right to listen to what the Main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party’s (DRP) founding Leader and former President of Maldives Dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says in the guise of Islam.

Speaking at the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s public rally held at Malhosmadulu Uthuruburi on last Friday night, Thulaadhoo MP Nazim Rashad said that the statement of Dictator Gayoom that the religion of Islam can only be safeguarded in the country by only DRP winning the election is self contradictory.

Nazim citing examples of the anti-Islamic actions of Gayoom’s regime, he said that Quran was included in the school curricula as an independent subject but Sictator Gayoom removed it and merged it in the Islamic studies. He said that this was done with the intention of wiping out the value of the noble Quran from the country.

Thulhaadhoo MP, who used to work in the education sector as a teacher, said that he had himself experienced the tragedy of removing Quran as an independent subject from the school curricula.

“Gayoom issued fatwas denouncing the alcohol trade as prohibited in Islam. But when he got the authority, it was no longer a problem,” he said.

Nazim said that Gayoom put up the façade of being a religious scholar, and in the garb of Islam his modus operandi was to disintegrate the moral values in the society. He added that Gayoom used to block and prison all other Islamic Scholars from preaching and educating the public
