Civil Servant salaries reinstated
The government has decided to reinstate the government enforced 20% reduction in the salaries of the civil service employees.
The issue of Civil Servant salaries has been dominating the political landscape since the beginning of the year is the issue of the salary cut of the civil service employees. The government had enforced a decision of 20% reduction in the salaries of the civil service employees.
Earlier Employees, opposition parties and some NGOs have protested this decision. Rallies were held condemning the Government.
The Civil Service Commission ordered the Government to reinstate the salary only to be met by the government’s refusal to do so. The Civil Service Commission filed a case in the court against the Government and the Court ruled in favour of the Commission. The Government did not heed to the verdict and continued with the salary cut under the claim that it was part of the restructuring and reviving the economy as per the instructions of the IMF.
The government assured that salaries will be reinstated as soon as the state of government income improves. Earlier the government had announced it would reduce about half of the Civil Service and absorb most of them into government-run corporations.
Meanwhile, Civil Service Commission (CSC) called to restore the salaries of the Civil Servants with the passing of the state budget of this year in the Majlis.
CSC said that the signs of the end of the economical instability of Maldives are now apparent and time has come for the authority to restore the salaries of the Civil Servants as agreed before.
The commission also said that the salaries should be restored since the President’s Office and the Minister of Finance and Treasure had earlier agreed to restore the salaries and the allowances of the Civil Servants from 1 January, 2011 and since the Peoples’ Majlis included the expenditure on the salaries of the Civil Servants in the passed state budget of 2011.
