No conflict between Democracy and Islam- Pres.
President Mohamed Nasheed has said that there is no conflict between Democracy and the religion of Islam.
In his yesterday’s interview to Indian television station NDTV’s popular show “Walk the Talk” during his recent visit to India, the President said that reiterated that Maldives is a hundred percent Muslim nation and that the people found no abstinence from introducing multi party system and the introduction of an unprecedented transformation of the country’s politics.
President Nasheed said that this shows that there is neither conflict nor any discrepancies between the religion of Islam and democratic principles. He said that the Constitution of Maldives was changed and the powers of the state were demarcated by the hundred percent Muslim nation with the approval of the people.
During the interview, the President also highlighted on the rise of pro-democracy movements in the Middle East. He underlined the importance of consolidating democratic values by the introduction of multi party systems to those countries.
President Nasheed said that Maldives will support every call to freedom and justice. He added that the country fully supports the pro-democratic movements in the Middle East.
President also called on the United Nations to send UN Peace-Keeping forces to prevail and strengthen measures to realize the aspirations of the Libyan people. President also expressed his concern for the countless human rights violations, including the widespread use of torture against political opponents in Libya.
