MDP has no problem with DRP making a coalition with DQP- Zaki


President’s Special Envoy and ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s temporary President Ibrahim Hussein Zaki has said that MDP has no problem with the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) building a coalition with opposition Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP).

Zaki said that the results of the Local Council Elections show the credibility of the leader of DQP, Dr. Hassan Saeed in the eyes of the people. He said that circumstances oblige DQP to join major political parties, either main opposition DRP or ruling MDP.

President’s Special Envoy also said that this is a necessity for Dr. Hassan Saeed if he wants to carry on his carrier as a politician.

Zaki said that DQP’s coalition with DRP will have no affect on the political environment of Maldives. He said that MDP will build coalition with parties which uphold the manifesto of MDP.

Jumhooree Party (JP) yesterday said that the party has not yet decided on the party’s take on the Presidential Elections of 2013. JP also said that the party has not decided whether the party leader Gasim Ibrahim will run the presidential elections or whether the party will join in coalition with another party.

Meanwhile, While ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won the majority in City Council, opposition DRP won the majority seats and councils in the first ever Local Council Election ever to be held in Maldives.

DRP won 10 Atoll Councils while MDP won only 4 Atoll Councils. And independent candidates won 1 Atoll Council.

From the 188 Island Councils DRP secured 91 Island Councils and MDP won 61 Island Councils. Independent candidates won 1 Island Council. MDP Coalition Adaalath Party and opposition Jumhooree Party won 1 Island Councils.

In contrast to the number seats, DRP won the majority seats. DRP won a total of 502 seats. That is 428 seats in Island Councils and 72 seats in Atoll Councils. MDP won 375 seats. That is 321 seats in Island Councils and 43 seats in Atoll Councils. Independent candidates won 160 seats. That is 150 seats in Island Councils and 10 seats in Atoll Councils. Opposition Peoples’ Alliance (PA) won 1 seat in Atoll Council and Adalaath Party won 15 seats in Atoll Councils. And Gaumee Ittihad won 1 Island Council seat.

 MDP won all the six seats of the Addu City Council and all the seats of the Male City Council while DRP won only two seats.

Dr. Hassan Saeed’s Qaumee Party didn’t win any seat in the local council election.
