Gayoom’s security attacks ‘Mavota’ Shareef

The leaked audio clip is a fake- Shareef

Securities of the former President of Maldives and the founding Leader of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom yesterday have attacked DRP Deputy Leader Ibrahim Shareef (Mavota Shareef) after an alleged recording of a phone conversation between Shareef and another DRP member was leaked.

Miadhu Daily was informed that supporters of DRP’s founding Leader’s faction gathered yesterday infront of DRP main office at the news of a council meeting being held at the office to sack Gayoom and other members of his faction.

Witnesses informed that Mavota Shareef was attacked by the securities of Gayoom when he made a remark at the calls for his resignation by the supporters of Gayoom. Eye witnesses at the scene told Miadhu Daily that Shareef was beaten mercilessly.

The few supporters of DRP Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali who were present at the scene protected Shareef from the assaulters.

“It was nostalgic. This is what Gayoom did during his regime. If anyone opposed his views, he will brutally attack the opponent by way of the Police. But now the Police will not attack anyone at his orders. So now he is doing the same thing using his thugs and supporters. We do not believe that this is how we should act with who has their differences within a political party,” the informant said.

The informant also said that DRP is a democratic party and that the party wants to uphold democratic values, not autocracy. The informant said that these actions are by those who do not know the true values of democracy.

DRP Deputy Leader Shareef told Miadhu Daily that the alleged audio clip is a fake and denied ever saying “we will beat them up and drag them away”. He said that the leaked audio was made by clipping sound clips from his different talks.

He said that he was beaten up by nearly 50 well built men and that he has been injured badly.
