Narayan Swami played a major role in the reform process of Maldives- President
President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the First Secretary of the Indian High Commission, Narayan Swami, played a major role in the democratic reform brought to Maldives.
Speaking at the farewell ceremony of the First Secretary of the Indian High Commission, Narayan Swami leaving Maldives on September 12 after spending 4 years in the country, President Nasheed noted that when the Narayan Swami first came to Maldives in 2007, it was a time when the people of Maldives were struggling for a change.
“Narayan Swami first came to Maldives in the year 2007. The people of Maldives during that time were facing different things. If the people had taken a wrong route, then the people might have faced many dangers. But we are in this ceremony because things went well. It should be noted that the role played by Narayan Swami is big,” the President said.
President Nasheed said that he had held discussions with the First Secretary since he came to Maldives up until now and said that he found to be a sincere and honest person.
In the brief press conference held after the ceremony, Special Envoy for the President, Ibrahim Hussein Zaki said that Narayan Swami has been a very considerate and genuine person who loves the people of Maldives.
“He is a close friend and companion of the people of Maldives. And because of him the relations between Maldives and India has further surged. Moreover, the friendship between the people of the two countries has deepened because of him,” he said.
Zaki said that the biggest achievement received because of Narayan is the acceptance of the change brought to Maldives by the international world because of his honest reports of the incidents that occurred during that time.
“It is because he was here. He experienced it firsthand. I particularly note his honesty and truthfulness in updating the Indian government on the news of the democratic reform process in Maldives,” he said.
Indian High Commissioner Dnyaneshwar M. Mulay also gave a speech at the farewell. He said that Narayan Swami is an exceptional person who undertook his responsibilities with almost no rest.
