Z-Faction operation has no legal status-Thasmeen

Leader of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that the operation breakaway Z-faction of the party has no legal status.

Speaking at a programme telecasted by the local TV Channel, DhiTV, DRP Leader Thasmeen said that the breakaway faction has no legal authority to operate outside the charter of the party.

Thasmeen said that just as it is mandatory upon the people to follow the Constitution, it is mandatory upon the members of a political party to follow the Charter of that party. He said that no member, whether it is the leader or the founder of the party, has the right to break the rules of the Charter.

Thasmeen also highlighted the work initiated by some members to resolve the internal disputes within the party. He said that the work is now on hiatus with the coming of Ramadan. He also added that he gives his full support for it.

Thasmeen reiterated that he is even ready to meet the Honorary Leader of DRP, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who heads the Z-Faction if Gayoom wishes to do so.

The news of the fuming internal crisis within DRP has been making headlines in the media for quiet sometime. The anti-Thasmeen movement first led by the dismissed DRP Deputy Leader Umar Naseer, which is now taken over by DRP founding leader Gayoom, has been continuously attempting to expose Thasmeen’s leadership lapses and defame him.

However, against the background of all these mounting challenges and the volatile internal clashes, Thasmeen on his part has been assuring his fellow party members and supporters he will remain firm as Party Leader despite the opposition to oust him. Thasmeenis seen to have the support of other strong politicians such as Speaker Abdulla Shahid, and MP HamdoonHameed.

Though it was Former President, DRP founding Leader Gayoom himself who endorsed Thasmeen to be his successor in party leadership, he later announced that his support for Thasmeen is now lost.
