65th Independence Day of India celebrated in Maldives
Indian Independence Day has been celebrated on 15th August, 2011 by the Indian High Commissionand members of local Indian Community in Maldives in the High Commission premises in Male’.
A function was held in the morning with hoisting of National flag by the High Commissioner, Dnyaneshwar M. Mulay, followed by singing of National Anthem.
The Address of the President ofIndia to the Nation on the eve of Independence Day was read out by the High Commissioner. Thereafter,in his own address, the High Commissioner appreciated the contribution of the Indian community &India Club in undertaking several social welfare & cultural activities, which has been well acknowledgedby the Maldivian public. He hoped that the recent establishment of the India Cultural Centre in Maldiveswill further increase the range of such activities, particularly to promote Indian and Maldivian culturalaspects. He encouraged the local Indian community to improve both the broader strong friendly tiesand also interaction at individual levels with Maldivian public. The programme was attended by largenumber of people from the Indian Community.
In the evening an Ifthar reception was held in the Abaarana Hall, Nasandhura Palace Hotel,where large number of Indian and Maldivian dignitaries were present, including President MohamedNaseed, Vice President, members of Cabinet, members of diplomatic corps and other prominentmembers of Maldivian community.
