Governmentt needs to learn to uphold the Green Constitution- Gasim

Leader of the opposition Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maamigili MP, Gasim Ibrahim has said that rights of the people of Maldives can only be secures only if the government upholds and runs the nation according to the Green Constitution.

Celebrating the third anniversary of the approval of the Green Constitution, Gasim said that the government should uphold the constitution which is the ideal pillar on which the country should be run. He said that the people should urge the government to rule according to the Green Constitution.

Gasim said that it is the Supreme Court who has the authority to act as the interpreter and arbiter of the Constitution. He said that neither the president nor the Majlis has the right to do this. He added that the Supreme Court is the only body that has the right to interpret what the Constitution means and it is this right that gives it the power to scrutinise all aspects of government.

Gasim said that the government’s different challenges against the Judiciary of the Maldives are a matter of public concern. Citing examples of these alleged challenges, he said pointed out the incident of the lock down of the Supreme Court building by the government.

“The people are very worried of this lowly and degraded act of the government. The President has been making very defamatory and derogatory statements about the Judges. He has described them as being hangmen and flagellants. The government has also been procrastinating the appointing of the President’s member for Judicial Service Commission,” he said.
