Mustafa to propose resolution against new maritime agreement
Thimarafushi MP, Mohamed Mustafa has said that he will be proposing a resolution against the new agreement of the government signed with the Sri Lanka to enable Sri Lankan fishermen to travel to the Arabian Sea via the Maldivian maritime territory.
Mustafa said that the Sri Lankan government has been trying to come to terms with the government of Maldives to enable their vessels to enter the maritime territory of Maldives for years.
He said that however, the government has been persistent on not signing the agreement because the Sri Lankan vessels might take advantage of the waters of Maldives. He said that under this agreement the fishermen of the neighbouring country will steal the fish of the maritime territory of Maldives.
Mustafa who is also a member of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said that the maritime territory of the Maldives is the right of the people and the people are against this new decision of the government. He said that such decisions should only be made after taking a public vote.
