Bengali New Year 1418 celebrated by Bangladesh High Commission
Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives
celebrated the first day of Bengali New Year 1418 (Pohela Baishakh) on 14 April
2011.
Bengali New Year celebration function was hosted at Dharubaaruge by the
Bangladesh Commissioner to the Maldives Rear Admiral A S M A Awal.
The function was well attended by the members of the diplomatic corpse and the
UN System, high officials, local elites and a large number of Bangladeshi
expatriates.
Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh highlighted the
historical context of introducing Bengali Year as agricultural year in agrarian
society in the then Bengal and significance of celebrating Bengali New Year’s
Day to rejoice the very soul of Bengali culture, music, poetry and dance.
He also focused on inclusive nature of the Bengali New Year celebration which is
joyously shared by all communities in Bangladesh and all Bengali speaking people
across the globe. New Year is also celebrated in Sri Lanka and some states of
India coinciding with Bengali New Year, the High Commissioner added.
The New Year celebration programme included a Display of the Bangladeshi
handicrafts, ceramic and garment products and miscellaneous items. Various types
of indigenous cakes of Bangladesh were also put on display. A cultural function
was staged by the artists from Bangladeshi expatriates. The guests were
entertained with traditional Bangladeshi cuisine to their delight.
The invited guests highly appreciated projection of the Bangladeshi culture,
tradition, products and cuisine through display, cultural function and sumptuous
Dinner arranged by the Bangladesh High Commission, Male’.
