Rallies held in the guise of DRP Gayyoom’s faction are held by PA to gain popularity-DRP
The main opposition party, Dhivehi
Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has said that the rallies held in the guise of the
Gayyoom’s faction of the party are held to gain popularity to Peoples Alliance
(PA) of Gayyoom’s half brother, Abdullah Yaameen.
A close official of DRP Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, who is a counsel member of
the party said that PA leader Abdullah Yaameen is behind the factionalism within
DRP and that they are trying to take advantage of some members of DRP to gain
popularity of their party.
The informant said that he does not believe that former President of Maldives
and founding leader Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom having any hand behind the rallies
held in his name. He said that Gayyoom will never try to create chaos and strife
within the party.
Moreover, the informant said that the venues are rented on the name of PA and
not on the name of DRP for these rallies held under the guise of DRP Gayyoom’s
faction.
He said that PA lacks individuality and popularity among the public and so they
are using the logo and flag of DRP to gain popularity.
Meanwhile, the news of the fuming internal crisis within DRP has been making
headlines in the media for quiet sometime. The anti-Thasmeen movement now led by
DRP’s founding leader Gayyoom, has been continuously attempting to expose
Thasmeen’s leadership lapses and defame him.
Though it was Former President, DRP founding Leader Gayyoom himself who endorsed
Thasmeen to be his successor in party leadership, his support for Thasmeen has
been apparently lost.
However, against the background of all these mounting challenges and the
volatile internal clashes, Thasmeen assured his fellow party members and
supporters he will remain firm as Party Leader despite the opposition trying to
oust him.
