If to participate in the pension scheme is made optional it will be better if it’s abolished –Maniku

‘If to participate in the ‘Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme’ is made optional, then it is better if the scheme abolished,’ said Mohamed Hussain Manik, the CEO of the Pension office.

At a press conference held at the Pension office yesterday, the CEO of Pension office said that if the amendment proposed to the Pension Act is passed by the Peoples’ Majlis, which makes it optional to participate in the Maldives Retirement Scheme, then there is no need of a National Retirement Scheme and it is better if it is abolished.

Speaking to the press, regarding the amendment proposed to the Majlis to make the participation of the Pension Scheme optional, Manik said that as the amendment proposed to exempt the Majlis members and the authorities of the three powers of the state from the scheme was rejected from the Majlis, they are trying to find another way not to participate in the Pension Scheme.

As the amendment proposed to exempt the Majlis members from the scheme was rejected by the Majlis, now the Majlis members also have to participate in the scheme.

“Also as the due date to participate in the scheme is today and no Majlis member has participated, so they have to pay the fine for the delay,” said Manik.

Furthermore, Manik said that as the Majlis members are saying that nobody should be forced to participate in this scheme and if not participated no one can file a case against it.
