Police’s work to prove the charged guilty fails because of inexperienced state lawyers-Ahmed Rasheed
Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Rasheed has said that the hard work of the police to prove the charged guilty fails because of the inexperience of the state lawyers.
Speaking on the Criminal Procedures Bill, Ahmed Rasheed noted that those lawyers allocated by the state to represent the state in trials of criminal prosecution are mostly very young, inexperienced and naïve.
“As a result of this, it is saddening to say that, those charged with dangerous criminal offences are acquitted,” Ahmed Rasheed said.
Ahmed Rasheed said that the Prosecutor General represents the state and is responsible to prosecute such cases of criminal offences.
Meanwhile, the recent waves of street violence have resulted in loss of life to a number of people – mostly young people and have resulted in injury to people, damage to property.
Initiating the debate on the amendment to the Clemency Act at Wednesday’s sitting of the Peoples’ Majlis, Faresh Mathoda MP, Muthalib said that that the escalating gang killings in the country have again now rekindled him to propose this amendment as to reinstate capital punishment in Maldives. He said that under sharia law, the death penalty can be administered to those who commit murder and crimes against the community.
