Ali Waheed calls to keep a police officer behind every gov’t crook who is hiding US Dollars

Deputy leader of the main opposition party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed has called on the government to keep a police officer behind every crook in the government who is US Dollars.

Ali Waheed said that President Mohamed Nasheed, prior to his declaration of the exchange rate of Rufiyaa, within a band of fluctuation of 20 percent around the current fixed exchange rate of Rf12.85 per US Dollar peg, said that Maldives has enough reserve of Dollars. He said that thus it is necessary to keep a police officer behind every crook in the government who is US Dollars.

Ali Waheed called on the government to think twice regarding the matter since the people will have to face the grave consequences of this sudden decision of the government. He said that this is now major national concern and that DRP will organize events against this decision.

Ali Waheed said that the problem is that the government does not have any fiscal or economic policies to tackle the dollar shortage. He said that this is evident in the many contradictory statements made by the President and high ranking officials of the government and MDP regarding the dollar issue.

Meanwhile, a press conference was held last night at DRP office by DRP and their coalition partner Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP). Speaking at the conference, Ali Waheed said that DRP will be sending the issue to the Peoples’ Majlis today as a major national concern. He also said that tomorrow a protest will be held to demonstrate the opposition of the people towards the government’s decision.
