National Crime Prevention Committee meets Security Services Committee of the People’s Majilis 


The high level National Crime Prevention Committee convened by President Mohamed Nasheed to oversee prevention of assault using lethal weapons, battery, murder, gang related violence and other organised crime on a nationwide magnitude has met with the members of the Security Services Committee of the People’s Majlis.

The meeting chaired by Speaker of Majlis Abdulla Shahid was also attended by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim and heads of some political parties.

Discussions during the meeting at the People’s Majlis were focused on implementing immediate preventive measures to reduce violent crime.

The Parliaments’ National Security Committee and Crime Prevention Committee highlighted the need for unceasingly effort by three powers of the state to gain public trust and enhance community morale.

Moreover, adopting legislation for effective prosecution was also deliberated by members of both committees.

Members of the Security Services Committee proposed increasing police powers to efficiently seize and arrest serious offenders.

Furthermore, decisions were made to withdraw leniency and create a non-tolerant attitude to serious criminal offences.

The significance of repairing penitentiaries with the support of Police and the National Defence Force to create structures and isolate serious and repeat offenders was also discussed.

Speaker of the Majilis Abdulla Shahid assured the National Crime Prevention Committee of the full support of Majlis Members in their efforts to reduce serious and organised crimes in the Maldives.

The Speaker also expressed optimism towards government’s efforts to jointly work with the Parliament.

Members of the Security Prevention Committee were present alongside all Members of the National Crime Prevention Committee at yesterday’s meeting at the People’s Majlis.
