Mustafa presents Majlis to investigate Mocom’s money laundering racket worth of $800m
Thimarafushi MP, Mohamed Mustafa has present the Peoples’ Majlis with a resolution to investigate Former President and DRP founding Leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his half brother PA Leader Abdullah Yameen alleged involvement in the international money laundering racket worth of $800 million.
Mustafa said that the resolution to investigate the matter was presented to the Majlis because according to the Indian famous The Week magazine alleged that the former President Gayoom and his half brother Yameen was involved in the international money laundering racket thought to be worth up to US$800 million under the guise of buying subsidised oil through the State Trading Organisation’s branch in Singapore and selling it on via ‘Mocom Trading’ to the Burmese military junta, at a black market premium.
Mustafa said that he believes that Sumon K Chakrabarti, Chief National Correspondent of CNN-IBN, who authored the report in The Week, has presented with enough evidence that can be used in a court of law against Gayoom and his brother Yameen for the charge of treason and embezzlement of state funds and corruption.
Thimarafushi MP also additionally said that if accurate and proven guilty this is the biggest act of corruption ever committed by a Maldivian leader. He said that it is obligatory upon the Peoples’ Majlis to clarify to the people their stance on this issue.
Mustafa noted that it is an individual obligation upon every member representing the Peoples’ Majlis to call and appeal the government to investigate this grave felony.
Furthermore, Mustafa said that the report of Sumon K Chakrabarti, Chief National Correspondent of CNN-IBN on The Week magazine was mainly based on the investigation report by international accountancy firm Grant Thorton and two other professional firms.
Earlier, in an interview given to MNBC One, the author of the article, Sumon K. Chakrabarti, Chief National Correspondent of CNN-IBN, reiterated that his report on The Week was factual and authentic. He said that he has enough documental evidences he had acquired in 6 months time. He said that he has no problems to even go to a court of law if it is necessary.
Meanwhile, the Secretariat of the Former President’s Office said that the legal team of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is now researching to take potential legal action against the Chief National Correspondent of CNN-IBN, Sumon K. Chakrabarti for writing a report on the Indian weekly magazine The Week alleging that Gayoom and his half brother, PA Leader Abdullah Yameen have been involved in an international money laundering racket worth of 800 million US Dollars.
