India Club hosts an exhibition entitled “Jyotirgamay – Towards Light”

An exhibition of paintings titled “Jyotirgamay – Towards Light” is currently on at the National Arts Gallery. The exhibition will continue till the 22nd of July 2010.

The exhibition was inaugurated on 1st July 2010 as a curtain raiser to the INMAFF, (India Maldives Friendship Festival) that will continue up to 15th August 2010. The inaugural function was graced by the presence of the Honourable Vice President of the Republic of Maldives, the Honourable Speaker of the Majlis, the Honourable Indian High Commissioner and several other dignitaries.

The exhibition features works by Mrs. Shashi Thakur, a talented Indian artist who has been residing in the Maldives for the past two years. The artist has held solo exhibitions in the past and this is her first exhibition in the Maldives. The Maldivian influences, that have created an impression on the artist during her stay in Male’, are clearly visible in the paintings.  The artist has presented the Maldivian environment, be it the sea, the sun or fishes, in her own way. The paintings depict a romantic tale of love and pining between the two primal life giving forces of nature, the sun and the sea, in an entirely innovative manner. Some paintings are a commentary on the increasing concerns about environmental issues. The vibrant colors and varied styles and techniques impart an entirely distinctive flavor to the exhibits.

The theme of “Towards Light” represents the artist’s belief in the progress of all living beings from darkness to the Ultimate Truth – the light.  The titles to the paintings that have been provided by the India High Commissioner impart an additional dimension to the works and urge the viewer to raise his thinking to a higher level.

An auction of the paintings will be held at the National Art Gallery on 20th July 2010 at 08:30 p.m. The auction provides an opportunity to art lovers and connoisseurs to acquire these brilliant pieces of art that will liven up any office, home or resort. The artist can be contacted at the Gallery, where she is creating more art pieces in her unique style, from 11:15 a.m to 4:00 p.m and 8:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m.
