MP Nasheed dares the government to take legal action on audio clip

Mohamed Nasheed, MP for Kulhudhuffushi Dhekunu has challenged the government to take legal action against him, if the government sees fit to take legal action against him because of the leaked telephone conversation between Nasheed and Qasim Ibrahim

“I know that some people have been calling for my arrest. I also understand that some of them wish to see me hanged. I urge the Police to investigate my case as well and lodge a case against me as well. Although the audio clip itself cannot be used as evidence in a Court, I know that what I write here can be. I have already confirmed receiving MRF 60,000 from Qasim Ibrahim, as a delay of an expected income from a sale of a safari boat has caused some financial difficulties.” Nasheed writes in his blog urging for action against him.

Nasheed also accused that the phone call was edited and leaked to defame his personality. He also noted that the saga has taught him valuable lesson and that it was well planned.

“I am not worried that people many criticize me. But some of the things which have happened during the past days have made me sad. A very close friend of mine has been behind the whole episode, as a political scandal to insult me. I am sad that those phone calls were used as weapons in a political battle between the government and the opposition. I am sad that the entire clip was edited to convey a certain message” he noted.

Nasheed also noted that he had not responded to the issue adequately in the press, to cool down the Maldives politics.

“If I have responded immediately, it would create further tension. I thought that it might be a better idea to step backwards and to think what was happening. I have spent the last week to think about the whole episode” he said.
