President Nasheed stirred up political turmoil – Opposition

Opposition Coalition has said that President Nasheed purposely stirred up the political turmoil in the country.

In a joint press conference opposition alliance consisting of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Peoples Alliance (PA), Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) and Jumhooree Party (JP), Ahmed Shareef, PA’s Secretary-General said President Nasheed purposely stirred up political tension in the country and is taking advantage of the crisis.

Shareef also added that President Nasheed’s concerns were increased since the main four parties began functioning as a coalition and President Nasheed has lost all hopes of securing a majority at the parliament. President then created political tension in the country by pushing the ministers for resignation and spreading allegations against Parliament, Shareef explained.

Shareef also said that after creating political tension, he has alerted the police and the MNDF. Shareef also said that when the alert was issued there was no disturbance in Male, except MDP demonstrations. Shareef also noted that resigned ministers had led some of the demonstrations in front of parliament.

Shareef also noted that opposition supporters has purposely restrained from demonstrating against the government, as it would give ammunition for the government to move for emergency rule.

Shareef also added that public broadcasting agency has spared no effort in government’s propaganda during the crisis and said that opposition would give that opportunity.

Ali Shareef, Secretary-General JP said corruption and bribery charges were fabricated after the opposition’s rejection of airport privatization. He also pledged to continue its efforts until arrested opposition figures are released.

Abdulmatheen, Deputy Leader of DQP said government began intimidating opposition after MDP’s talks with PA failed to create results, thereby failing to achieve majority for MDP in the parliament. Matheen also added that current actions by President Nasheed were the penalty for not bowing to MDP.

Abdulrasheed Nafiz, DRP’s Secretary-General said opposition would not give the opportunity for the government to “touch opposition MPs”.
