India Maldives ties enhanced due present govt.

– Indian Defense Minister


Relations between India and Maldives has been further improved as a result of the present democratic government and that India will always maintain close ties with Maldives, Indian Defense Minister Mr. AK Anthony has said.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Dharubaaruge to mark the closing of the week long celebrations to mark the 63 anniversary of the Indian independence, which commenced in Male’ on 12 August, Indian Defense Minister said India welcomed the democratic good governance and the many benefits that such a system will afford the Maldivian people.

He said at a time of constant threat from terrorism and the dangers of increasing drug abuse, it is important to cooperate when combating these dangers and that India was ready to support Maldives in these fronts.

He noted that India has always provided training and support to Maldives Defense Force personnel.

He said being native to the city of Trivandrum, he takes about 4-5 hours to reach New Delhi but takes only an hour to reach Maldives. He said he meets many Maldivians, as large number of Maldives lives in Trivandrum for various reasons. He said due to this he has developed a special interest in maintaining close ties with Maldives.

Indian Defense Minister also met with Indian community in Maldives at Indian High Commission, yesterday. At the meeting, he urged his fellow countrymen, to give priority to the affairs of the Maldives, instead of just thinking of the income earned and to be a role model to the rest of the expatriates working in Maldives
